CM Mamata Accuses BJP of Using Exit Polls to Demoralize TMC Workers Ahead of 2026 Assembly Elections
Record turnout of 92.65% was achieved in the second and final phase of polling for the West Bengal Assembly election on April 29, 2026, amid isolated incidents of unrest. This brings the total turnout across both phases to nearly 93%, marking the highest polling rate in any West Bengal Assembly election since Independence, as reported by the Chief Electoral Officer of the state.
The second phase encompassed 142 Assembly seats in seven districts of south Bengal, with notable turnout rates in rural areas. Purba Bardhaman recorded the highest voter participation at 93.39%, followed by Hooghly and South 24 Parganas with 91.41% and 91.45%, respectively. Kolkata South saw the lowest turnout at 87.25%, while adjoining districts continued to demonstrate strong voter engagement, with notable figures such as Howrah at 90.93%.
This significant voter turnout is consistent with the first phase, where 93.19% participation was recorded on April 23 across 152 seats. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar emphasized the historic nature of this election, referring to it as “Chunav ka Parv, Paschim Bengal ka Garv,” highlighting the pride in this democratic exercise and its implications for the state’s political landscape.
