Ministerial Vacancy Nearly Delays Class 12 Board Exam Results in Tamil Nadu Amidst Administrative Uncertainty
Class 12 State Board exam results in Tamil Nadu will be released as scheduled on May 8, following significant backlash against an initial postponement due to the absence of a School Education Minister. The decision to delay was based on a requirement for ministerial authorization, a practice that has become a tradition since 2018 when K.A. Sengottaiyan, the then Minister, first released the results. Prior to this, the Directorate of Government Examinations handled the announcements, highlighting a shift in how educational outcomes are now politicized.
Under the previous administration, the Tamil Nadu government had moved away from ranking students by performance, a decision praised by educators and parents alike for alleviating undue stress on students. This practice continued under the DMK government, with the Education Minister directly releasing exam results and timetables. However, this year’s election period created a unique challenge; without an active Minister, the education department’s initial stance prompted fears of missing out on timely opportunities for college applications.
Following widespread criticism from child rights groups and educators, the government reversed its decision to postpone the results. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar emphasized the importance of timely results, stating they are essential for the welfare of students. Consequently, this change allowed students and schools to access the results without disruption, resolving the confusion caused by the earlier announcement.
