Historic Participation: Himachal Pradesh Sees 72.42% Voter Turnout in Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats Elections

Polling for the municipal elections in Himachal Pradesh recorded an impressive voter turnout of approximately 72% across 47 municipal councils and nagar panchayats, while the four municipal corporations saw a participation rate of 63.61%. The elections took place on May 17, 2026, and were marked by a peaceful voting process, according to State Chief Election Commissioner Anil Khachi. The polling took place in 64 wards of the municipal corporations and included numerous candidates vying for 449 positions.

The turnout varied across districts, with Hamirpur leading at 78.89% followed by significant participation in Shimla and Una. Notably, women’s voter turnout surpassed men’s in Kangra and Mandi districts, reflecting a shift in electoral engagement. Unfortunately, the election was marred by the death of a 70-year-old voter in Chamba, who reportedly suffered a heart attack while heading to cast his ballot.

Vote counting for the municipal councils and nagar panchayats has commenced, with results for the municipal corporations expected to be announced on May 31. Security measures have been implemented to safeguard the electronic voting machines. Former Chief Minister Shanta Kumar expressed optimism about the democratic process, emphasizing the need for electing honest leaders to combat corruption and make the electoral festival more meaningful for the citizens of India.
