ASHAs Call on Kerala CM-Designate V.D. Satheesan to Fulfill Pre-Poll Commitments to Community Health Workers.
Leader of the Opposition V. D. Satheesan met with the Kerala ASHA Health Workers’ Association (KAHWA) to discuss their grievances, reiterating his pre-poll commitment to address their demands following a lengthy protest over wages and benefits. ASHA workers had previously staged a 266-day strike to advocate for fair compensation, with their situation emerging as a significant issue in the recent political landscape. Satheesan assured the workers that their requests for increased honorarium would be prioritized in the new government’s Cabinet meetings.
The ASHA workers’ protests not only emphasized their ongoing struggles but also highlighted a shifting perception of the Left’s stance on grassroots health issues. Public sentiment has increasingly shifted against the CPI(M) due to their handling of the protests, with criticism emerging from within their own ranks regarding their perceived insensitivity towards the workers’ plight. This change in narrative has impacted the Left’s traditional support base, as the images of dedicated ASHA workers enduring difficult conditions serve as a stark reminder of the government’s failures to address their concerns.
The UDF’s campaign effectively capitalized on the ASHA agitation, framing the current administration as “anti-worker,” which resonated with voters during the elections. Satheesan’s commitment to resolving ASHA worker issues underscores the importance of public sentiment and worker advocacy in shaping political strategies. As the new government prepares to take office, the immediate challenge will be to fulfill these promises and restore confidence among essential health workers in the state.
