Negotiations Underway for the Release of Individuals Held Captive by Armed Groups in Manipur

Efforts are ongoing to secure the release of individuals still held hostage by armed groups in Manipur, following the release of 31 individuals from the Kuki and Naga communities. These individuals were taken captive amid a surge of violence, including the shooting of church leaders and civilians in Kangpokpi and Noney districts. The state police have confirmed that momentum is building through the collaboration of civil society organizations, the government, and security forces, which has led to the majority of those kidnapped being freed.

Discussions are actively taking place between various stakeholders, including civil society representatives, government officials, and security forces, focused on ensuring the safe release of the remaining captives. Among those liberated were twelve women from the Naga community and both men and women from the Kuki community, who were handed over to security forces under coordinated efforts. The situation reflects a significant collective commitment to resolving the hostage crisis and restoring safety in the region.

Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam has emphasized the government’s proactive engagement with community leaders and civil organizations to address the hostage situation. The fatalities and injuries suffered during the recent violence highlight the urgent need for de-escalation and dialogue among competing groups in Manipur, in order to prevent further loss and to preserve community integrity across ethnic lines.
